Low Level Laser Therapy

What is LLLT?

low-light-laser-therapyLLLT (Low level laser therapy), also known as laserpuncture, is a painless, sterile, non-invasive, drug-free treatment that is used to treat a variety of pain syndromes and injuries. Around the world, laser therapy is rapidly becoming a medical therapy that can heal wounds up to 60% faster and also reduce the cost of treatment for many conditions.

How Does Laser Light Heal?

Low level lasers transmit non-heating, organized energy packets of light through the skin’s layers at all wavelengths in the visible range. The end of this range is infrared light, which is able to penetrate the skin and tissues more deeply. Infrared light has both anti-inflammatory and immune stimulating effects; it also improves circulation which helps the body remove waste products and replete nutrients. Infrared light has been used for thousands of years for its healing properties, most notably in Finnish saunas, in which specific rocks were used that gave off light in the infrared spectrum. The low level laser concentrates this healing light into accurately measured doses that can be focused on the injured or painful site.

What to Expect During a Laser Therapy Treatment Session

Treatment generally lasts anywhere between 2 and 20 minutes, and most people don’t feel anything at all! The most noticeable sensation is the touch of the head of the laser as it contacts the skin. There are no heat or shock sensations, as commonly felt from ultrasound and electric muscle stimulation, respectively. 3-5% of patients have reported a slight tingling or tapping in a nerve or along a nerve pathway, or a slight feeling of warmth.

75-80% of patients notice an improvement in their condition during or immediately following low level laser treatment. Response depends on the type and severity of the condition. It make take 3-4 treatments before a change is perceived.  Treatments build on each other, so a series is often beneficial.

Dr. Carter incorporates low level laser into her treatments when it is needed and does not provide laser only sessions.

  • Dr. Liz is awesome.  I went to see her to help me heal my ulcerative colitis.  I knew that I needed a holistic approach with bodywork, supplements, and a support system.  She has a healing touch and a very genuine desire to help.  I was in a pretty bad place with my health when I first went to see her, but I was trying to get on the road to recovery.

Dr. Liz was very understanding and just jumped in to start the healing journey.  She was a major part in the healing process and after months of being sick I finally felt normal again.  I’m so thankful to her.  Go see her if you’re looking for an all around amazing person and wonderful naturopathic doctor!
